SAT TEST - Tips & Strategies Part I
SAT TEST - Tips & Strategies Part II

Build your vocabulary

There are more benefits to building your vocabulary than simply scoring a few extra points on the SATs. Granted, many of the
vocabulary words found in the Critical Reading and Writing section of the SAT are not commonly used in everyday conversation.
Nevertheless, if you want to succeed on the SAT and express your thoughts clearly and cohesively, you will need a strong
command over these words.
You don’t have to memorize every word in the dictionary, but you should be able to recognize each word and have a vague idea
of what it means. Learning more vocabulary words will unequivocally increase your SAT score.

Refresh and refine your math skills

The Math section of the SAT is not comprised of complex equations that occupy the minds of rocket scientists.
To a large extent, the questions are relatively simple and do not require an extraordinarily high level of math skills.
If you are in 10th or 11th grade, you should already know how to solve all of the questions - you just have to refresh your
memory. Go through all your old notes if you have them and if not, there are plenty of resources online and on this site to
help you. Here is an extra tip for you: almost a third of the Math section of the SAT is based on Geometric topics, which means
that if you are comfortable with Geometry you should do fine on the test.

Practice on real SATs

Building your SAT vocabulary and refreshing your Math skills are the best ways to score higher on the SAT.
Another recommended strategy is to practice on previous SATs. Set the time and start the test as if you were taking the real
test. Try to use the time wisely, pacing yourself, and approach each question strategically and efficiently. This will train you
to manage your time wisely and increase your stamina. It is easy and dangerous to get caught up on one question on such
a long test. Practicing on real SAT tests while timing yourself for each section will condition you to be aware of the time and
complete the test without fatigue.

Register online

Registering online will save you some time and postage. Also, you will be able to check your score as soon as it is ready
rather than having to wait two weeks for the mail to arrive.

Test centers

When you register for the SAT, you can choose the test center in which you will take the test.
Make sure you know where the test center is located when you choose it. Ideally, if possible, you should take the test at
your own high school, but if you cannot, choose the school closest to you. It is extremely important that you get to your
test center on time. Also, plan on arriving at least 15 minutes earlier.

What to bring

1) Calculator
Even though the College Board says every question on the SAT can be solved without a calculator, bring one.
If you do not bring your own calculator, the proctor will not have one for you. Sharing calculators is prohibited.
Bring a calculator you are accustomed to using so that you won’t have to waste any time learning how to use it.

2) Fresh batteries
Bring extra batteries in case you run out.

3) Photo ID and admission ticket
You will not be allowed to take the test without these.

4) No. 2 pencils
Bring enough no.2 pencils and a good eraser. Pens are not allowed on the test.

5) Water and snack
It’s hard enough just sitting in one place for hours. You will be sitting in the same spot for over three hours to take a test
that could make the difference between being accepted to your first choice school or going to your safety.
The frustration, stress, and pressure can make you extremely tired and worn out. It’s good to take a sip of water or eat
something to help you relax and regain some energy. At the end of each hour there will be a short break when you will be
allowed to eat and drink.

6) Watch
Keeping track of time is essential

7) A good night’s sleep
Getting a good night’s rest before the test is equally important as solid preparation.

Most question on the Math section of the SAT are multiple-choice, which means that you can use the plug-in strategy.
Sometimes you can easily find the answer by plugging in the choices to the question. This only works because the questions
are multiple-choice.

Do not try to cheat!

1) You won’t need to. If you take the Smart Education program seriously, it will effectively condition and prepare for the SAT.
2) The College Board has designed the test to prevent cheating. Looking at your friend’s test will not help you because you
will not have the same test.
3) If you get caught cheating, you will be dismissed and your scores will be cancelled.

Set a goal for yourself

Setting a goal in your mind before you take the test will help you concentrate on the task before you.

Relax

So many people go insane, literally, while studying and stressing over this test. There are far worse things that can happen in
your academic career than performing poorly on your SAT. Also, you can take the SAT as many times as you want!
So please - relax… Stressing out will not help you on this test..

When cancelling your score may be a good idea

If you totally bombed the test, don’t hesitate too long to cancel your score. Recently, colleges have been carefully observing
every test you take instead of only considering your highest score. Therefore, if you don’t want to blemish your SAT record,
cancelling your score may be a good idea. You can do so by asking the test supervisor for a Request to Cancel Test Score Form.
Complete it immediately and return it to the test supervisor before leaving the room. If you already left your room, they must
receive your request to cancel scores in writing by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the Wednesday after the test date.
