What is the SSAT?

SSAT stands for Secondary School Admission Test, and is used to determine
admission to specialized high schools that require an SSAT score.
The lower level SSAT is for grades 5-7, and the upper level test for grades 8-11.
Multiple editions of the test ensure that no student takes the same SSAT twice.

What’s on the test?

The SSAT has two parts: one brief essay portion and one multiple choice section.
The multiple choice section is comprised of Math, Verbal, and Reading Comprehension.

The SSAT is a timed test broken up into five sections: 25 minutes for the writing sample section, 40 minutes for the reading
section, and 30 minutes each for the remaining multiple choice sections. In the writing sample, students will be asked to support
or argue against a topic statement. The rest of the test is comprised of two 25-question math sections, and a verbal section
consisting of 30 synonym and 30 analogy questions, and 40 reading comprehension questions based on seven reading passages

How is it scored?

Scores are calculated by adding the number of questions answered correctly, minus a fraction of the number answered incorrectly.
Skipped questions will not be penalized.

Each question answered correctly receives 1 point
Each question answered incorrectly for a multiple-choice question will result in a deduction of 1/4th of a point.
Each skipped question will not be result in any point deduction.
