What is the PSAT/NMSQT?

PSAT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test, and is used to measure
a student’s strengths and weaknesses before taking the SAT - a practice test
of sorts for the SAT. High-scoring students can qualify to enter competitions
for prestigious scholarships and participation in recognition programs.

What’s on the test?

There are five sections on this test:


Two 25 minute critical reading sections
Two 25 minute math sections
One 30 minute writing skills section

The allotted time to complete the test is two hours and ten minutes.

Critical Reading sections

are comprised of 13 sentence completion questions and 35 critical reading questions - a total of 48 questions per section.

Math sections

are comprised of 28 multiple choice questions and 10 student produced responses ? a total of 38 questions per section.

The Writing Section

is comprised of 14 identifying sentence error questions, 20 improving sentence questions,
and 5 improving paragraph questions - a total of 39 questions.

 
How do I register for the PSAT?

Sign up at your high school, which is where the test is likely to be administered.
The test will not be administered at a College Board test center. No online
registration is available for the PSAT/NMSQT. Make sure to speak to your own
high school counselor or principal for more information about registering, paying
fees, and times and locations.

How is the test scored?

Each correct answer counts for one point toward the final grade.
Unanswered questions result in neither a point gain nor a deduction. Each multiple choice question answered incorrectly results
in a deduction of 1/4th of a point while student produced questions answered incorrectly do not result in any deduction of points.


Each question answered correctly receives 1 point
Each unanswered question does not receive or lose any points
Each multiple choice question answered incorrectly will result in a deduction of 1/4th of a point
Each skipped question will not result in any point deduction

How do I find my score?

The scores will be mailed to your high school principal in December.
Each school will determine when scores will be released to students. Scores will not be available by phone or Internet.
